Some deaths in custody have been publicly known, including a middle-aged hospital director who lost his life in detention after 120 days in confinement.

A detainee held with the individual testified that he was led to the yard by correctional officers just prior to his death, clearly wounded and unclothed from the waist down. His body has not been returned to Gaza.

Additional detainees who died in confinement by Israeli authorities remain anonymous. Correctional authorities and defense forces provided investigators with the figure of casualties in custody, and minimal other details for example the site where they lost their lives, but not the prisoners’ names.

Identification Challenges

For 21 instances, mostly individuals from Gaza, investigators were unable to correlate the few details given by government bodies to a fatality recorded by human rights groups, by means of accounts from released detainees or reporting in the media.
