A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
