All Fans Are Encouraged to Become the Fourth Haim Sisters Member.
"When are you speaking to the band?" an inquiry pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can be their fourth member."
However, there remains one problem: I also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are in plentiful company. A host of celebrated fans have publicly begged for the position.
One thing is obvious something is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award contenders.
Like all the best ensembles, they're a inseparable unit. Their visuals often feature them walking in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such unfettered happiness you find yourself thinking, "I want to be a piece of that, too."
"How often on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a bass'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the ultimate honor. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to make music."
"And thus anyone is invited to be the fourth Haim sister."
Historic Milestone
The group have called into a break, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in support of their new album, I Quit.
They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first female band ever in the running for the trophy.
"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"
The importance of the honor resonates with the sisters.
"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "But we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."
Emotional Upheaval and Candor
The project emerged from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.
The words detail breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.
"I adore way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to actively work on blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."
Refinement of Style
That recent confidence demanded a fresh approach – more organic and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.
For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drum sound.
"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.
"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."
Anecdotes and Collective Humor
The trio's openness inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal horror stories.
Someone ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.
"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."
A Secure Legacy
It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their position in the rock pantheon.
They're major draws, with successful albums and an worldwide fan base.
However the sister act will forever be their top commitment.
"We have been playing music since I was four," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still kicking."
