The original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed that parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch of an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.

The entrepreneur, that co-founded the company with his partner, revealed how he plans to personally create this new product within an individual series highlighting issues the company was barred from addressing publicly.

Longstanding Conflict Involving Founders versus Corporate Owner

The recent announcement deepens the continuing disagreement between the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods giant that has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.

Both founders maintain that the parent company along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".

Watermelon Sorbet becoming an Emblem of Support

Mr. Cohen stated via an Instagram video how he's developing an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, requesting public suggestions for the product's name and additional components.

“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”

The watermelon has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its coloration, that mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Activism and Recent Developments

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company transferring their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales in the occupied West Bank.

The new product line is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company that was first established in 2016 to support ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".

Management Changes and Future Plans

The founder stated that he will develop other frozen dessert varieties that address concerns which the company was silenced from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.

This development comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's in September, following decades with the organization, mentioning worries that the company's autonomy had been undermined following Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.

At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked how “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence so that it can achieve the social mission, the principles which it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
