RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.
The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.
UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."
Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The UN says IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
