Educator Slain and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Firefight at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and abducted at least 25 students in an raid targeting a educational institution for young women in the northwestern part of Nigeria, police reports indicate.
The gang of attackers breached the comprehensive secondary school for girls in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on Monday, police confirmed.
The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and taking the pupils captive from their living quarters, according to a statement.
A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now undergoing medical care.
Witnesses reported a sizeable number of assailants, known locally as bandits, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to generate terror.
Community members told reporters that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.
The authorities announced they had sent "additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and community security teams" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is underway in surrounding forests and believed flight corridors.
In recent years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have become frequent targets for weapon-carrying factions, who frequently execute kidnappings to request monetary settlements or leverage deals with the government.
The attack in Kebbi State highlights the persistent security crisis troubling the locality, causing relatives in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they expect and desire their daughters' safe return.
