Right-leaning responses to the partial release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship portray former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions raise serious concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded greater transparency.
“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a future legislature may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly does not comply with both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally Behind the Release
However, a segment of conservative commentators and former President loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet a few are not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative voices to launch the offensive.
“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been concealing these documents for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they’ll try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was comparatively muted following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to pass a bill requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative personalities were provided physical folders of files that included little previously unseen data.
