Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 individuals were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have labeled a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.
The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the individuals who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with a number in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
