Citizens have assembled around the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The attack led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel responded by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are considered trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.

"Our violent adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not create a risk to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government delayed official remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still took place around the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired throughout Israeli television channels.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.

Negotiation Talks in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the conditions of the agreement.

A prominent representative involved in the negotiations said that an night meeting of indirect talks began at evening in Egypt.

The source said the day's discussions ended without tangible results, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.

He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet produce any major advancement," but mentioned that intermediaries are striving to close the disparities between the two sides.

Essential Points in Talks

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The exchange of the hostages still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for relief supplies distribution
  • After-conflict management of the region

Civilian Reaction

In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, young a woman - whose sibling lived through the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and many more were captured by Hamas militants - explained: "No location feels like home now and until every captive are released no one will have peace of mind."

"When we see everyone home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can begin to heal," she concluded.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel states forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

Activist one woman explained: "It's necessary do every compromise required for the captives to return. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."

Surveys now regularly indicate that around seventy percent of the population want the hostilities to finish in return for the liberation of the hostages.

Gaza Circumstances

At the location of the music event, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.

From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the heavy Israeli shelling carried on.

In the urban center, attacks were documented in the dawn of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, area and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"Once the dusk falls, the fear appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing last year, described.

"We are afraid of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, particularly my youngest child who rests his face on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we check the reports to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be achieved and that the conflict will resume to us."

Health Emergency

The medical facility in the urban area announced it had taken in the corpses of six people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the south part district.

Nasser hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated another two dead people had been transported. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the south, medics reported.
