Jailhouse Surprise: The FormerPresident Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison

He contested the legal system and the law won.

Two months subsequent to being handed a 27-year sentence for seeking to “destroy” the nation's political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro finally appears destined for incarceration.

Imminent Imprisonment

The found-guilty coup-monger – who had been subject to home confinement in his estate while a series of court processes and challenges unfold – is largely predicted to be jailed in the near future, during mounting speculation that he will be moved to a well-known high-security penitentiary.

Historical Remarks on Prisoners

Over Bolsonaro’s long public life, the far-right ex- military man exhibited scant compassion for Brazil’s jailed individuals.

“For what reason must we offer these scoundrels a good life?” he once pondered. “They should just get screwed, end of story. That’s what I reckon.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro declared: “Unless you desire to end up behind bars, the only thing required is to avoid rape, abduction or rob.”

Incarceration Facility Speculation

Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has shocked backers, a group of four this week inspected the prison in an apparent attempt to prevent the judiciary from banishing him there.

Izalci Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was one of the visitors, said he expected the 70-year-old figure to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and worried his destination could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s severe intestinal problems – the result of a life-threatening knife attack during the 2018 political campaign – signified it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He will not be able to manage if they move him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” he added, who also voiced anxiety about packed cells and the quality of jail cuisine.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas remembered observing cells accommodating forty detainees: “That’s almost one square meter per prisoner.

“We talked to the convicts and they grumble, naturally, of the awful cuisine,” continued the senator.

Supporters React

The senator isn't the only voice speaking out before the ex-leader's predicted imprisonment.

Penning in a leading daily, another ally, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” end to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” public service and claimed Brazil was about to see “the largest political injustice in its past”.

“This is an unfairness that gnaws the hearts of millions people in Brazil,” the former minister said.

Mixed General Reaction

This could be true given the considerable backing Bolsonaro maintains on the right-wing. Yet his predicted imprisonment has also gladdened the hearts of millions others who feel he ought to be incarcerated for planning to prevent the incoming president from taking power – and also plotting to have him assassinated.

Reimont Otoni, a congressman for the current president's allied group, said: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be put in a hole. No one wants Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. No one desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We wish him to get proper handling – but respectful handling while incarcerated. He can’t continue being his own prison warden for his entire life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have for a long time applauding the severe conditions of prisoners, had unexpectedly become aware to their privileges. “Recently has the extreme right – which has always claimed that human rights were not for lawbreakers – decided to inspect a jail to find out what circumstances are really like,” he stated.

“He is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “shameful, demeaning handling”.

Potential Incarceration Environment

Despite speculation that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently houses about fourteen thousand prisoners, his expected location seems to be a close jail for police officers and other “unique” prisoners known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

His potential cell are much more pleasant than those in the larger jail, although nevertheless a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro had while residing in the spectacular presidential palace, around 20 kilometers away.

As per information, the room Bolsonaro could likely occupy in Papudinha has about 260 square feet – approximately the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and features a 12 sq metre bathroom with a shower and a 12 sq metre terrace. “The ex-president might be permitted to have a set and even a small fridge in his room as long as they were provided by his family,” the report suggested.

Ideological Comments

The lawmaker criticized the speculated plan to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the supreme court judge who led Bolsonaro’s legal case and will determine his fate in the {
