Scream OG Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a massive family reunion. This new chapter signals the iconic return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, per tradition, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a role you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that kept me up at night," Lillard reveals.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallon Characters
Reports have confirmed that a trio of distinct characters from past films are set to return in this new outing, even though dying in previous installments. The precise method of their return is still unclear. Audiences should prepare for the reappearance of the endearing and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Legendary Status
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first time since a small appearance is a dream come true, even if he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The actor vividly recalls the exact moment he got the news from the series creator.
"I remember the phone call. I remember the pleasantries. I remember him posing the question. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he says. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the years since the original film was released, which left Lillard feeling very nervous.
"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, for better or worse," he explains. "A part that is now represented in each and every Scream mask that walks around every October 31st."
The Anxiety of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling immense pressure about hoping not to be the one who ruins the beloved series.
"The outcome is either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "At the start, I don't know if the film will be successful. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the franchise. I don't want people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Run High
While countless longtime fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the big question of how he and the others return remains. Perhaps they exist rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a previous plot device. Alternatively, maybe they are in some way still living in a bizarre communal situation. The chance of a meta-horror narrative, inspired by classic horror movies, also is on the table.
Moviegoers will discover the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
