Space Traveler Discloses Depression After ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She noted that even with the backlash, considerable good had emerged from the experience, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the edge of space.

The diverse crew also included leaders in various fields.

The company behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
