The Latest Casual Game Mode Sparks Heated Debates Over Bots, XP Rewards, and Queue Times
Recently, Battlefield Studios launched a fresh playlist called Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this mode mirrors the standard Breakthrough setup but features several key changes:
- Each team has just 8 real players, with the remaining filled by AI-controlled opponents.
- Activities done by real players award full XP, while AI activities provide reduced XP.
- Just a pair of locations are available: Cairo Siege and Empire State map.
- Features like Player tags, achievements, and stat tracking have been turned off.
In short, this mode delivers on its title: it's a laid-back take of Breakthrough. At face value, you might think it's a good idea, as it gives additional choices for players seeking alternative methods to have fun with the game. However, if video games has shown one thing, it is that you can't please everyone. In other words, a lot of Battlefield 6 players are upset.
Player Responses: From Fury to Praise
"Gamers prefer real players. Don't repeat the mistakes of your competitors," reads one reply to the mode reveal. "Absolutely shocking concept," says another. Meanwhile, on the Battlefield subreddit, one user notes, "It's unclear where we are going with this title," while another details all the issues they believe to be broken in Battlefield 6: "Fix bugs, fix drone glitch, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We don't need this bot mode."
However, for every complaint, some gamers sharing how much they're enjoying the recent addition. "It's enjoyable to practice, human participants prevent it from being a total farmfest but it's quite laid-back," says a forum post. "The community fails to see that there are gamers who have lives and can't play this title all the time. Allow them to find a middle ground," states a different comment. One reply via social media explains that as they're "a parent gamer with busy schedules, this is great for me," while someone else applauds the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Valid Criticisms and Community Feedback
Despite the support, there are valid points to criticize the new mode. A few folks have highlighted that it will make wait times more extended for different playlists because of the large amount of options currently available. Similarly, some areas already encounter AI-filled matches in the existing playlists. It also seems a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a required amount of real players, even though it focuses mostly on combat against bots.
Finally, a major complaints is that Battlefield Portal was meant to provide complete rewards, even against bots, but that was removed when they attempted to eliminate bot farms from the mode. So this new playlist feels like the community meeting them in the middle, according to a Reddit comment. Another labels this mode as the developers "making a mistake significantly, I had so much fun in the first couple of days, what prompted them to change it?"
Looking Ahead: Will Changes Be Made?
If Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something to date with the latest installment, it's that they're paying attention and responding to player input. Tasks being too difficult got fixed rapidly, as did the required Redsec challenges. It is likely that, should analytics indicates this new playlist isn't performing to their expectations, they won't be shy to change it again.
