The Showrunner Discloses He Knows How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that Pluribus would become a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and a second season already in development—Gilligan and his team opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get swayed by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“It's like being constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
The Central Mystery: Does the creator See the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff are not listening by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
