Cyclone Melissa is projected to escalate to a uncommon category five cyclone as it turns towards Jamaica, bringing life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides.

The hurricane, which registered winds of up to 195 km/h as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is presently veering northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is anticipated to make landfall by midweek, based on data from hurricane specialists.

Advisories of electricity outages and structural damage have been announced as the hurricane generates up to 76cm of rain and coastal flooding as high as 13ft above typical tides. "Find safe refuge immediately," locals have been told.

Melissa is the thirteenth hurricane in the ongoing Atlantic season, which usually concludes in November.

Category Five Cyclone Risk

A category five hurricane is the most powerful category, with winds of at least 252 km/h.

Although Melissa is expected to reduce in intensity to a fourth-level storm before making landfall on Jamaica, experts said there was "very little practical difference in the total effects" upon landfall, and that the cyclone will be "equally strong" when it hits the island.

With storm-force wind and rainfall already expected ahead of it crosses the island's interior - possibly even the city of Kingston - warnings indicate that "safety measures need to be finalized quickly".

"Several days of harmful winds and torrential rain have begun and will cause catastrophic and life-threatening rapid water accumulation and numerous rock slides," urged weather authorities.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness commented: "I understand that there are countless citizens who are worried, who are very concerned, and rightfully so: you should be concerned.

"Yet the most effective method to handle anxiety and any apprehension and concern is to remain prepared."

Locals are being advised to protect their properties with sandbags and wooden boards, and to stock up on necessary supplies.

Regional Effects

Advisories are also in effect for regions of the neighboring country encompassing the capital, Port au Prince, the neighboring country and eastern Cuba, where this storm is projected to bring comparable impacts by the middle portion of the coming week.

Rock slides already being caused by the hurricane have resulted in two fatalities in the country, according to emergency services.

Projected Trajectory

This weather system is predicted to cross Cuba by the middle of the week before moving through the Antillas Mayores and emerging into the open ocean.

By the time it makes contact with the Caribbean nation, it is anticipated to have reduced to a third-level cyclone.
